Athlete Spotlight: August

Each month we highlight a different CFR member using our “Athlete Spotlight,” where we will ask a series of “get to know you” questions. This will help introduce you to the members of our community that you have yet to meet, OR If you have met them, teach you a little more about them! You might just find out something new or something you have in common!

August’s “Athlete Spotlight” started with CFR as an avid ReBoot attendee, but has more recently ventured into CrossFit. We would like to introduce you to….

Steven Sabo

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, etc):

"I am the only son to my wonderful parents Carolyn and Craig. And brother to three sisters, one of which goes here! I work in the city of Butler as a Financial Planner along with my father and sister."

What made you decide to try CrossFit and why CrossFit Recreate?

"It was actually my sister Alex and my mom who got me to try it and they went to CrossFit Recreate so I figured it would be a great place to start. I wanted to start working out to get stronger but find it hard to focus at the gym on my own so I wanted a class structure and CrossFit was perfect for that."

What CFR class is your favorite? (ReBoot, CrossFit, partner)

"I would say that CrossFit is now my favorite type of class. Working with a partner is always fun!"

As a previously avid “ReBooter”, how do you feel the CrossFit classes differ?

"With ReBoot, they are a lot more cardio focused and tend to have longer workouts, whereas the CrossFit classes focus more on using the barbell and heavier weights with shorter lengths to the WOD. They both have their challenges, but I noticed I began to get stronger when I switched to CrossFit classes."

What made you switch from primarily attending ReBoot to CrossFit classes?

"I had been doing ReBoot since I began coming to CrossFit Recreate and really enjoyed them. To be honest, I was afraid of the barbell work in the CrossFit classes. I felt like I wouldn’t be able to do the lifts correctly and that I would look weak trying, but I wanted to get stronger and I felt that the only way to do that was to lift heavier weights. So my good buddy Kyle Springs, as well as my mom and sister kept pushing me to give CF classes a try and ever since I started I don’t think I can go back!"

What is your favorite WOD/movement and your least favorite WOD/movement?

"I would have to say that my favorite movements would have to be push presses, the skier, and running. My least favorite movement would be any sort of snatch!"

What have been your biggest takeaways from CrossFit?

"As cheesy as it may sound, my biggest takeaway would be that you are much more capable than you think! As long as you’re willing to put in the work and try hard!"

Any advice for someone new interested in trying a class at CFR?

"Just go for it! When you look at a workout that is posted online, they can seem pretty intimidating, but once you get into them you realize that they aren’t as bad as they may look and the more you do them, the better you will get. They are never “not hard” but you just get better at them."

Proudest CrossFit accomplishment(s)?

"I’d say that my proudest moment so far has been switching from primarily ReBoot to CrossFit classes. I really didn’t think I had it in me, but here we are!"

What are your fitness goals for this year?

"My fitness goals for this year are just to continue to get stronger and live a healthier lifestyle. I would also like to get my toes to bar down a little bit better and hopefully accomplish a handstand push-up!"

We’d like to thank Steven for taking the time to answer our questions and being a committed member of the CrossFit Recreate community! We are excited to see what is in store for him in the future!
