I was raised in a generally well fed and active family, but was never competitive or concerned about fitness/athleticism. I danced ballet and lyrical from age 11-23, and played soccer in high school. I enjoyed moving, being part of a team and a class, unaware that I was laying a foundation of health for my adult life. I have always enjoyed cooking good, nutritious food, and learned from the patterns of what my mom fed us as kids to implement as fuel for further community and health in later years.
When I was 23 years old, I was in a car accident in which I broke my lower leg and ankle and some small bones in my foot. As I healed and went through physical therapy to regain strength and function in my leg, I began to research the best food to eat to fuel recovery and decrease inflammation. I found the Paleo diet and was intrigued to find that some of my favorite recipes were created by CrossFit athletes. I went down a rabbit trail of investigation to learn more about this bone and muscle building, all encompassing fitness regimen, and though I was intrigued, left it alone for another two and a half years when my husband and I moved to Butler. Everyday on my way home from work, I drove by a small CrossFit gym, and my curiosity grew. I finally worked up the guts to stop in, sign up for my initial movement evaluation with pushups, sit-ups and air squats. I haven't looked back since!
Since starting CrossFit, I have gained so much more than strength, mobility, stamina and endurance. I don't take for granted that I can keep up with my kids, carry in groceries, race up stairs and play yard games with the best of them :) I have gained a deeper understanding of preventative health and wellness. As I care for my patients as a nurse, as I raise my kids and feed my family, I take the lessons of movement, food as fuel and community that CrossFit has taught, and continues to teach me, to share and implement with those around me. I am blessed to be a part of a community that values the health and fitness of the individual, and strengthens the community as a result. I am eager to help individuals reclaim their health and use their miraculous, God-given bodies to live a full and satisfying life!
